The Repair Conversation
The Repair Conversation: Step Out of the Loop, Together
Six short lessons you watch as a couple, with the exact words for naming the loop, calling a pause and coming back.
Get the Repair ConversationIf you read our article, you know the fight that keeps coming back isn't really about the dishes. It's a loop: one of you pushes to be heard, the other pulls back for peace, and each move sets off the other.
The Repair Conversation teaches you both to step out of it, with words you can actually remember at ten at night.
Six lessons, watched together
Each lesson is short enough to watch on the couch before dinner, and ends with one small thing to practice that week.
- Find your loop. Who pushes, who pulls back, and what each of you is protecting.
- Give it a name. A phrase you both use, so the loop becomes the problem instead of each other.
- The pause. How to ask for a break so it sounds like a promise, not a door closing.
- The return. Coming back every time, and what to say first.
- Repairs. Small moves that lower the temperature, and how to notice the other person's.
- The big one. Using all of it on the topic you've been avoiding.
What it isn't
The Repair Conversation is a communication course, not therapy. If there is violence or fear in your relationship, it isn't the right help: in the US, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
Questions
What if my partner won't watch it? Start with lesson one on your own. Seeing your side of the loop changes how you move inside it, and that alone often changes the conversation.
How long is each lesson? Short enough for one evening, with one thing to practice that week.
Is it only for married couples? No. The loop shows up in any close relationship, whatever stage you're at.
