The 3 A.M. Reset: Seven Sleep Habits, One Night at a Time

If you read our article, you know the 3 a.m. waking usually comes down to seven ordinary things: caffeine, a warm room, light at the wrong time, a moving wake-up time, the evening drink, lying awake trying harder, and the clock.

The 3 A.M. Reset takes them one night at a time, in the order that holds.

Why one change a night

Changing seven habits at once lasts about as long as a new year's resolution. One change a night, each one built on the last, is something you can keep.

So every evening there's one short audio: the change for tonight, why it matters, and what to do if you wake.

The three weeks

1. Week one: the clock. One wake-up time for all seven days, and outside light in the first hour.
2. Week two: the room and the evening. Cooler, darker, the phone out, caffeine earlier, the last drink earlier.
3. Week three: the night itself. What to do at 3 a.m. instead of lying there counting.

What it isn't

The 3 A.M. Reset is a habits plan, not medical treatment. If you snore loudly, stop breathing in your sleep, or wake up tired for weeks whatever you change, talk to a doctor first.

Questions

Do I need any equipment? No. A way to play a short audio, and a clock you can turn to face the wall.

What if I miss a night? Pick up where you left off. The order matters more than the dates.

How long is each audio? A few minutes, meant to be heard before you start winding down.
